Anyone who’s known me for some amount of time likely knows that I enjoy trivia. Little tidbits of inconsequential or unimportant, yet interesting (to me at least) information.

In this vein, I’ve come across a podcast which fills this interest of mine quite nicely. It’s written and recorded by none other than Mike Rowe. Yes, that Mike Rowe. The guy from Dirty Jobs, the voice of The Deadliest Catch, the dude trying to sell you a Ford on TV, that guy from QVC, but not MikeRoweSoft Mike Rowe. And despite what may be a vague similarity in appearance, not the Maytag Repair Man. That last one is none other than Colin Ferguson.

The podcast is called “The Way I Heard It“, which, in the course of an episode, he describes a situation or situations in which a person found themselves, typically a famous, or infamous, person. The best way I can describe it is as a “slow reveal”, where you’re never quite sure exactly who he is talking about, but you will find out by the end of the episode.

An episode typically runs between seven and nine minutes, including sponsorship message which typically has a Mike Rowe twist or anecdote to go along with it.

While the stories told likely would qualify as trivia, I believe that it is still interesting to the non-trivia lover, based on the facts you find out about a historical situation or persona.

Even if that doesn’t interest you, the way in which he develops and unfolds the story are great examples of writing and storytelling in the third person. At some later time, I’ll go over other podcasts which I enjoy which are also storytelling, but in the first person.

So, I encourage you, go check it out. Then, go forth, and spread the probably useless yet fascinating information you just learned!
